Primary Storage
My work has involved creating a wide range of primary storage solutions for photographic works and other materials, both 2-D and 3-D. This includes designing both temporary and long-term storage systems that take into account travel requirements and accessibility needs. I have developed storage for complex and large-format works, rolled objects and glass materials, including broken glass plate negatives, ensuring safe support and protection tailored to each object’s vulnerabilities. I design housing that can accommodate display, reducing the need for repeated handling and allowing objects to be accessed or viewed more efficiently without compromising their preservation.
An example of my previous work includes the design of primary storage for a large collection of broken plates. I designed protective folders from foam and museum board off-cuts which could be used as both temporary and long-term storage to accommodate project deadlines and object priorities. These simple yet effective enclosures kept fragments safely together while maintaining accessibility and left the option open for future, more extensive treatments.
Secondary Storage
My experience includes developing a wide range of secondary storage solutions, including the design and construction of boxes, files, and folders tailored to the needs of diverse collections. This includes custom housings for both individual items and larger groupings, ensuring long-term protection, ease of access, and stability in storage environments. I have designed specialised boxes to accommodate oversized or unusually shaped objects, as well as folders and enclosures that provide additional support for fragile or vulnerable materials. In every case, my approach balances the requirements of preservation with practical considerations such as handling, organisation, and space efficiency.
Examples include designing and adapting boxes to fit and support cased photographic materials, glass plates, and photographic equipment such as colour filters.
